Why I Wrote This Book: The Surprising Link Between Blood Sugar and Skin Health
Share
When I first sat down to write Flatten Your Curve, I had one clear goal in mind: to inspire positive change. But that inspiration didn’t just come from reading clinical studies or client conversations, it came from my own health journey and an unexpected wake-up call from a routine doctor’s visit.
“You’re in great shape, Janine. Blood tests look good,” my doctor said, and I was ready to pat myself on the back. But then came the surprise: “Your blood glucose levels are on the high side of normal.”
Wait, what?
I was shocked. I ate well, exercised regularly, and kept my sweet tooth mostly in check. How could this be happening? The more I thought about it, the more frustrated I became. It felt unfair. But frustration soon gave way to curiosity. I needed to know more, not just for myself, but for my friends, family, the therapists I work with, and anyone else unknowingly riding the same blood sugar rollercoaster.
And that’s when I really started digging into the research.
What I discovered was eye-opening: unstable blood glucose levels aren’t just a metabolic issue - they’re often the hidden culprit behind skin concerns like acne, inflammation, premature ageing, and more. The skin, our largest organ, is intricately tied to our internal health, and blood glucose imbalances can quietly wreak havoc on it. Even people with “normal” results, like mine, could be experiencing symptoms without understanding the cause.
So many of us are eating what we think is a “healthy” diet. I wasn’t downing sugary soft drinks or chocolate bars, but I was having refined carbs like sourdough bread. Turns out, those foods break down into sugar fast, spiking blood glucose just as much as a dessert might. After a breakfast of toast, I’d hit a wall of fatigue, a sure sign my body wasn’t managing its energy efficiently.
Once I started making changes like swapping refined carbs for whole foods and tweaking my meals for better balance, I felt a noticeable shift. More energy. Fewer cravings. Better sleep. A calmer mood. And yes, healthier, more resilient skin.
That’s why I wrote this book.
Not to overwhelm you with science (though there is some of that!), but to empower you with knowledge. To help you connect the dots between your daily choices and how you feel and look. Because blood glucose balance isn’t just about weight or diabetes prevention. It’s about thriving. It’s about glowing skin, steady energy, a clear mind, and a body that works with you, not against you.
If you're struggling with unexplained breakouts, dull skin, or just feeling “off,” I invite you to explore this journey with me. With just a few small changes, you might be surprised how much better you can feel and look.
Your body wants balance. And you deserve to feel your best.
